There are few things more exciting than a brand new season of our favorite pressure cooker of a TV show, Project Runway. Project Runway Season 8 promises to be filled with surprises – why do you think they added the extra 30 minutes to the show? – and we are eager to meet the dedicated designers, dive into the drama, get intrigued by their inspirations and see what they bring to the table.
We were thrilled when we found out one of our very own Southern California locals would be bringing his red carpet repertoire to the show. Michael Costello, a Palm Desert native, has been on the scene here in the OC for the past few years and his line of female form featuring couture has been catching the eye of sexy starlets ever since he burst in the scene at the ripe old age of 11. That’s right, he has been constructing clothing since before he could even drive!
I had a chance to interview Michael Costello on the big premiere night of Project Runway Season 8 and here is what this charming designer had to say:
What was the very first garment you ever designed?
I did a pair of pants at the age of 11 - my mom helped me do it.
Describe the feeling of selling one of your pieces.
It's like sending your kid to school for the first time... Only your kid comes home at 2:45pm and your garment might be in a bar or a night club at 2:45 am!
Do you ever design clothing for yourself?
I tried but it didn't work out .
How did you discover Michael Costello’s designs?
We have been friends for a very long time, and I always saw the raw talent in him. He has always possessed total potential and has been styling and creating couture pieces for celebrities for many years.
Describe his current line.
Michael knows how to dress a woman’s body. His clothing is form fitting and flattering. He always adds a little drape in just the right place to make every woman look amazing in his clothes.
What type of woman does he design for?
He designs for a fashion forward woman who is looking for a unique piece. He designs for a wide range of ages and styles. He has dressed Vicki Gunvalson, Jeana Keough, and Alexis Bellino of the Real Housewives of Orange County, so you can see his styles work for a wide range of styles and ages.
Speaking of celebs…which ones have worn his designs?
Toni Braxton, Paris Hilton, Nikki Hilton, Michelle Williams, Tila Tequila, and Nicki Minaj.
What do you think he will be known for creating on Project Runway?
Beautiful red carpet looks. His signature pieces are couture gowns.
Which type of character do you think Michael will be on the show?
The comedian! Michael has a great personality and is very caring. I will be shocked if he causes drama or is a villain. I think people will be intimidated by his talent, not by his character.
